Gibson 'Mastertone' Banjo headstock restoration

This client was dissappointed with a previous neck replacement to restore his Gibson banjo since he wanted it more true to the original with the 'Gibson' shell logo as well as 'Mastertone' engraved on one of the pearl blocks at the twelth fret.

First the headstock veneer is removed with a heated putty knife. The knife has been ground to provide easier penetration into the glue joint.
The Face ot the headstock will be scraped, cleaned and sanded in prep for the new veneer. I also inspected the truss rod
The old finish is stripped so that the completed headstock can recieve new lacquer.
Stripper makes easy work of scraping away the old finish. The photo does not reveal the downward scaping motion of the chisel which works well on the softened finish.
This head veneer came with the pearl inlays already installed. My job was to allign the exact location and then trace ever so slightly over size of the head's outline. The goal was to make the flush trim routing as easy as possible.
The lamination is all routed and sanded and ready for lacquer.
This neck also got a refret.
And a new coat of red on the head....
...and "mastertone' engraved in the pearl block
...With 5 or so coats of clear lacquer

Fender Custom Shop Telecaster Re-finish

This client owns a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster but ordered it with a clear natural finish meaning that you could see the grain of the swamp ash under the finish. He decided several years later that he wanted a transparent red finish. I did several other things he wanted. He also wanted an american flag pickguard. Unfortunately, I did not take any 'before' pics but it was basically 'like new' but a different color.
